Leisure Sociology

The sociology of leisure time (or sociology of leisure time ) is a special sociology and sub-discipline of the sociology of time . She analyzes the handling of personally freely configurable time.

Development of the sociology of leisure

Until the middle of the 20th century, leisure was not considered or studied by sociology as a separate phenomenon. Only in the years after 1950 did leisure move into focus because new questions were asked: How do children, young people and old people spend their free time? Does boredom and unreasonable activity lead to social problems ? Youth protests were attributed to too much free time, as was the supposed “retirement shock” of the elderly. This topic changed after 1960, when the proportion of leisure time in the population increased. In this phase, the oriented sociology of leisure on the opposition between leisure and work . When the character of work had fundamentally changed in the last third and gainful employment made up an ever smaller proportion of the human lifespan and became accessible to fewer and fewer people, the sociology of leisure was no longer based on the duality of work and leisure , but became part of the sociology of time .
