Fremantle Port Authority

The organization Fremantle Port Authority , also known under the abbreviation Fremantle Ports , is the authority responsible for the operation of the port of the western Australian city of Fremantle .

Port administration

In 1829, when the English colony at the Swan River was created, the position of the immediately became harbor master of Fremantle (Fremantle Harbor Master) created. At first the ocean-going ships could only moor at a long pier built out into the open sea before the new port at Fremantle, planned by port engineer Charles O'Connor , was opened in 1897 . The port authorities built a lighthouse on both sides of the river. From 1880 the name of the port officer was "Chief Harbor Master of Fremantle". Captain Charles Russell held this position from 1886 to 1902. In 1900 the English postal administration designated the port of Fremantle as the new landing stage for mail steamers from England.

Fremantle Harbor Trust

In 1903, a new authority called the Fremantle Harbor Trust was created to manage the port administration . It consisted of five members, three of whom were appointed by the Governor of Western Australia and the other two by the Chamber of Commerce of Fremantle and the Chamber of Commerce of Perth . The agency began operations on January 5, 1903 in the Dalgety Building . At that time W. Leslie was the port engineer and Captain Irvine was the port master. In 1907 the new Fremantle train station was inaugurated near the harbor.

Fremantle Port Authority

The administration form of the Fremantle Harbor Trust was replaced in 1964 by the new Fremantle Port Authority. The port authority is responsible for the expansion of the port facilities, the organization of operations in the port, the handling and securing of shipping traffic and the operation of the lighthouses in their area.
