An alien's passport is a travel document for nationals of foreign countries, people with unclear citizenship or for stateless persons .
In Austria, alien passports are usually only issued in the public interest. However, in 2009, for reasons of international law, the practice was liberalized for stateless persons and people with unclear citizenship, in some cases also for those entitled to subsidiary protection .
The German travel document for stateless persons is issued according to more restrictive guidelines.
