French Cloisters (German: French cloister) is a cloister ensemble that was reconstructed on Paradise Island in the Bahamas with Gothic building elements transferred from France.

history

The origin of the cloister is attributed to the former Augustinian monastery of Montréjeau . However, the art historian Céline Brugeat sees the building elements as a new combination of various abandoned cloisters in the French Pyrenees region , such as Tarbes , Auch , Bouillas and modern additions. It also identifies related elements as newly installed at Hammond Castle in Massachusetts in the USA.

The Gothic elements were originally bought up in France by William Randolph Hearst , who wanted to have them rebuilt in the USA. Parts later came into the possession of Huntington Hartford, who had them reconstructed and rebuilt in 1968 by JJ Castremanne in a park on Paradise Island.
