The Federal Association of Friends of Addiction Aid (called “Friends” for short) is an umbrella organization of nationwide self-help groups for addicts and relatives.

history

The first circles of friends were founded in 1956 in Diakonie -Heilstätten in Baden-Württemberg under the name "Freundesring der Abstinenzler eV". At around the same time, similar initiatives were carried out by former patients of the Haus Burgwald sanatorium . In the years and decades that followed, groups emerged throughout Germany.

From the 1960s onwards, the groups increasingly networked at the state level, and the first state working groups emerged, which later became today's state associations. In 1978, in Schwalmstadt - Treysa, what was then the Federal Working Group of the Friends of Addiction Aid (BAG) was founded as an amalgamation and umbrella organization of the state associations at the federal level. In 1980 an office was set up in Kassel . In 1999 the name was changed to Friends of the Suchtkrankenhilfe Bundesverband eV and today's logo and mission statement were introduced.

Mission and self-image

The self-image of the Circle of Friends is derived from the mission statement adopted in 1999.

The circle of friends see themselves as friendly groups in which addiction and all related problems can be discussed openly. Their aim is to promote the physical and mental health of the group participants and to accompany them in a contented abstinence. The association does not call for a general ban on addictive substances, but supports measures to restrict access and prevent them.

organization

In Germany there are currently around 650 groups of friends that are organized in 16 regional associations in all federal states.

In addition to discussion groups, the self-help groups of the circle of friends also offer seminars and leisure activities. The groups are open to addicts of all forms of addiction and relatives. They meet in the same groups and are not separated by age, gender or addiction.

The circles of friends are members of the General Association for Addiction Aid eV and the German Central Office for Addiction Issues. They are also members of the Diakonisches Werk in Hessen and Nassau and Kurhessen-Waldeck e. V. connected.

Other self-help associations

There are a number of other self-help groups for addicts and relatives, some with different approaches, for example the Blue Cross in Germany and the Blue Cross in the Evangelical Church, which are also part of the Diakonisches Werk , the Kreuzbund , which is part of Caritas and the Good Templars who belong to the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband . Without a governing body, AAs are Alcoholics .
