Friar Island is a small island in the Wilhelm Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . In the group of the Wauwermans Islands it lies immediately northeast of Manciple Island .

The island is first recorded on an Argentine map from 1952, still unnamed. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1958 after a figure from the Canterbury Tales by the English writer Geoffrey Chaucer , written around 1387 .
