The Treaty of Ghent ended on 24 December 1814 , the mutual hostilities the British and Americans in the British-American War from 1812 to 1815. The treaty essentially restored the pre-war status quo . The war, which was unsuccessful for the Americans, failed to achieve any of their goals.

Trade agreements with the British Isles were only relaxed slightly over the following years. Legal trade with the vast British colonial empire was still denied to the United States.

In spite of the peace agreement, the battle of New Orleans between the two contracting parties took place in January 1815 , as information about the peace agreement had not yet reached the USA due to the slow communication channels at the time. It was not until February 18 that the United States ratified the treaty.
