Graveyard (red)

The cemetery of Rot, part of the municipality of St. Leon-Rot in the Rhein-Neckar district in Baden-Württemberg , was laid out in 1877.

history

The original cemetery of the place was around the church of St. Mauritius . This had become too small at the beginning of the 19th century, so that the nave was extended on three sides and the old cemetery was also given up. As a replacement, a new cemetery was created in 1813 on the opposite side of the street (in the area of today's schoolyard of the old school, where a stone cross marks the place today). However, this was dimensioned far too small and was close to the development of the place. In 1876, the grand ducal district doctor criticized a major grievance : the graves were overcrowded and new burials were often carried out over the old coffins at a depth of barely a meter. The smell of putrefaction penetrated the surrounding courtyards. The district office immediately ordered the construction of a new cemetery.

The community then opened up today's cemetery about 500 meters east of the village in Gewann Mittelfeld in 1877. During a visit in 1878, however, the location of the cemetery appeared to the district office to be too far outside of the location, so that it was investigated how long corpse bearers needed from the nearest and most distant point of the location to the cemetery (10 and 25 minutes respectively). For health reasons, the district office then ordered the purchase of a hearse.

After the Second World War , the cemetery was given a court of honor for those who died in both world wars. In 1969 a cemetery chapel was built.
