Unterdorf church with the historical part of the cemetery

The Affoltern cemetery is a cemetery in the Affoltern district in the north of Zurich . It is located near the Affoltern train station and the Unterdorf church , which serves as an abdication room for the cemetery.

history

In 1683 the Unterdorf church was built and the original cemetery was laid out around the church. This cemetery was expanded three times in 1684, 1706 and 1870 before it was ceded to the political community in 1876, as a revision of the federal constitution in 1874 had transferred the funeral system from the churches to the communities. The area directly adjacent to the church, however, still belongs to the parish today and continues to be looked after by the parish along with the graves on it. In 1928 Affoltern expanded the cemetery again. When Affoltern became part of the city of Zurich as part of the second incorporation, the responsibility of Affoltern was transferred to the city. In 1945 the plan to relocate the cemetery was abandoned and the cemetery was enlarged again until 1951. Service buildings were also built according to plans by the architects Baerlocher and Unger. The Affoltern cemetery was expanded for the last time in 1982–1983.

Area and buildings

In the north of Zurich in the historic Unteraffoltern near the Katzensee is the Affoltern cemetery on the border between the city and the countryside and between old buildings and new construction projects. The community grave was set up next to the Unterdorf church, from which one can imagine the older design of the cemetery; Angled yew hedges separate this historic cemetery area from the younger ones. Next to this area is the administration and service building, including the laying out wing from 1951. The small forecourt is adorned with the sculpture Seated with Dove by the sculptor Uli Schoop . Wide lawns and mainly native trees and bushes give the Affoltern cemetery the character of a park. From the eastern cemetery area, high-rise buildings can be seen, in the west at the Unterdorf church one can imagine the rural idyll of earlier times.
