Germersheim cemetery
The Germersheim Cemetery is the cemetery of the city of Germersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Today the facility is located in the town on August-Keiler-Strasse , opposite the Richard-von-Weizsäcker secondary school . The cemetery is bordered in the southwest by Hans-Mayer-Straße and in the east by Straße Am Vogelpark . It lies on the Bornpfuhl and on the Germersheim – Bruchsal S-Bahn line along the Rhine .
history
Around 1480 the cemetery was probably located in Mittelgasse, until 1771 at the Catholic Church of St. Jakobus and was then laid out outside the city. In 1834 the city acquired today's cemetery grounds. In 1935 the first morgue was completed, which was destroyed in the Second World War, but was immediately rebuilt. In 1971 the new cemetery hall was inaugurated and the previous building was demolished one year later.
There are numerous exotic trees in the complex.
The graves of the Jewish population of Germersheim are in the Jewish cemetery in Rülzheim .
Important graves and monuments
In the cemetery there are some historically significant graves, as well as graves of other important personalities for Germersheim (sorted by year of birth):
- Franz Freiherr von Podewils (1779–1842), Colonel and Commander of the City of Germersheim
- Friedrich von Schmauß (1792–1846), fortress director
- Eberhard Arbogast (1793–1875), one of Napoléon Bonaparte's liberators from the island of Elba
- Alphons von Stockum-Sternfels (1796-1857), Kgl. Bay. Major General and Commandant of the Germersheim Fortress
- Georg Friedrich Blaul (1809–1863), dean and pastor, and his son Guido Blaul (1838–1863), vicar
- Friedrich Carl von Busschemünch (1815–1849), Kgl. Prussian Rittmeister
- Ernst Wündisch (1821–1908), pastor and dean, honorary citizen of the city of Germersheim
- Adam Disqué (1828–1900), District Court Director , Kgl. Chief magistrate i. R.
- Theodor Graf von Holnstein (1839–1913), Lieutenant Colonel ret. D., and his wife Anna Countess von Holnstein (1854–1912)
- August Keiler (1842–1925), senior teacher a. D. and dialect poet
- Eugen Sauer (1879–1961), dean and clergyman, honorary citizen of the city of Germersheim
- Eugen von Weissmann (1892–1951), General of the Air Force
- Hermann Lichtenberger (1892–1959), major general ret. D.
There is also a French memorial for the war of 1870/71 , German war graves from both World Wars , a memorial for the 17th Infantry Regiment "Orff" , which was stationed in the Germersheim Fortress , a Russian field of honor and the cemetery cross with an inscription in German and Latin language .
In addition, the so-called Lovers' Grave for Lina Erne (1881–1905) and her fiancé Jakob Wolz (1878–1905) existed until 2007 , both of whom died on St. Martin's Day of the same year. After his fiancée died as a result of an abortion , Jakob Wolz committed suicide and both were buried in the same grave. In 2007 the tombstone was removed after no more grave fees were paid. The grave still exists as a bed with a picture of the former grave.
Also the case Rouzier murdered Emil Müller (1905-1926) was buried in the cemetery, his grave is not longer receive.
The city of Germersheim offers irregular tours of the historic cemetery complex.
