Wehrheim cemetery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wehrheim cemetery has been the municipal cemetery of the village of Wehrheim since 1822 .

history

Originally, the dead were also buried in the churchyard in Wehrheim . Since Wehrheim had been two-mansion since the Diezer Treaty of 1564 and the Electorate of Trier was Catholic and Nassau-Dillenburg was Protestant, there were two churches in the village. The Jewish residents buried their dead in the Jewish cemetery in Anspach before the Jewish cemetery in Wehrheim was opened in 1864 . For the Christian residents of the village, the situation arose in 1822 that the Protestant churchyard had become too small. In 1822 the community therefore acquired a total of 305 rods of arable land (around 2700 square meters ) in the districts "Oberste Hohl", "Auf der Hohl" and "Hinter den Schlossgärten" on the outskirts above the Bizzenbach . The first burial took place in 1823. The purchase of 44 trees for planting in the cemetery is documented in the municipal accounts from 1836. In the following centuries the cemetery was expanded several times. A first extension took place in 1860, in 1870 and 1882 further extensions were made.

Churchyard

Some gravestones have been preserved in the churchyard of the Protestant church.

The "Todtenhaus" located there was demolished in connection with the construction of the town hall in 1860/61.

buildings

The central building is the modern mourning hall. Inside there is a memorial plaque for those who died in war. Outside there are two more memorials that commemorate the dead of the war. The war memorial for the Franco-German War of 1870/71 has the shape of an obelisk , the tip of which has been replaced by a ball. The year 1870/71 is mentioned in a laurel wreath. The inscription reads:

"The community of Wehrheim of their heroes
Ph. Eifert
Chr. Eifert
Joh. Hofmann
Hein Lang who fell in the war against France "

- inscription

Next to the monument is a lapidarium with eleven historical tombstones.

On the right side of the cemetery is the memorial to commemorate those who died in the world wars. The facility consists of an elevated space to which a central staircase leads. The monument itself is a monumental stone cross with the inscription "The community of Wehrheim - your brave sons" on a high base. To the left of the cross is a plaque with the fallen of the First World War, on the right a plaque with the fallen of the Second World War.

Another memorial stone commemorates the dead in the fighting around Wehrheim in the final phase of the Second World War, Easter 1945.
