The cemetery hall and memorial of the Jewish community, Düsseldorf was built in 1986 according to plans by Wolfgang Döring .

Location and nature

The new Jewish cemetery is located in the area of the Nordfriedhof , near the Ulmenstrasse entrance, but it is not officially part of the Nordfriedhof. Also, unlike the rest of the north cemetery, it is not administered by the city of Düsseldorf, but by the local Jewish community. The cemetery hall and memorial are connected to one another. The memorial is clearly highlighted. Anyone who wants to visit the cemetery hall must first go through the memorial. A large canopy was developed from the structure of the cemetery hall and connects all the buildings to form an ensemble.

architecture

The memorial has the classic proportions of adding two cubes, each five by five meters. The El Tránsito Synagogue in Toledo and the Pazzi Chapel in Florence were the models for the proportions . The roof was separated from the walls by a light band. This makes the roof seem to float and the walls receive grazing light from above. The surfaces of the walls are made of natural stone in which the names of the concentration camps and the victims are engraved. A ner tamid burns on the front wall . The cemetery hall consists of a truss construction. The interior has been made simple, the wall surfaces in light gray. Frieze-like texts were affixed to the walls.
