Cemetery Cross (Oberreifenberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cemetery cross in Oberreifenberg is a sandstone cross from 1733.

The origin of the cross is unknown. According to tradition, it comes from Arnoldshain . However, the age can be determined from a chronogram to the year 1733. In the text of the base, in the inscription, 15 letters are written in capital letters within the words. These represent Roman numerals that add up to 1733.

Above the inscription there is an oval field of coats of arms. The actual coat of arms is chiseled out. It is therefore unknown who the cross is supposed to remind of. It is also possible that the base originally belonged to another cross. On a painting from 1835 the cross is shown with a different base.

The cross originally stood in the old cemetery in Oberreifenberg. This was on the spot where the village church has stood since the middle of the 19th century. The old cemetery was closed and the cross was moved to the new cemetery in 1847. On August 12, 1908, the cross was moved inside the cemetery and has stood in its current location ever since. During renovation work in 1972/73, a number of documents from 1908 were found inside the cross.

In October 2009 the cross was badly damaged by vandalism , the arms of the crucifix were torn off, and legs and body were broken. The renovated cross was put up again on October 23, 2012.
