The Friedrich Mohr Monument in Koblenz is a memorial in honor of the city-born natural scientist Karl Friedrich Mohr . It is located in the old town in front of the Eichendorff grammar school .

history

In 1909, the Chamber of Pharmacists of the Rhine Province proposed the construction of a monument in honor of Karl Friedrich Mohr. The Friedrich-Mohr-Monument was originally erected on the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring (today Friedrich-Ebert-Ring 50 ° 21 ′ 16.9 ″  N , 7 ° 35 ′ 44.2 ″  E ) and inaugurated on June 21, 1914 . The monument donated by the city of Koblenz was created by the Bad Kreuznach sculptor Hugo Cauer . The memorial complex was badly damaged in the air raids on Koblenz during World War II.

The facility was not rebuilt after the war. Instead, only the bust of Karl Friedrich Mohr was placed near the old location on a new plinth in front of the entrance to the Eichendorff Gymnasium. The reason for the location was that the founding of a previous school at the instigation of Mohr was set up in the shopkeeper's guild house in 1855 . The remaining parts of the complex, such as the bronze plates with information about Mohr's teaching activities, are now stored in the Middle Rhine Museum .

construction

The original monument on the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring was a circular building with figural panels about Mohr's teaching activities. On a pedestal in the middle was a bronze bust with a frontal portrait of Karl Friedrich Mohr in the ancient style . The surviving bust stands today on a new base in front of the Eichendorff high school.
