Wellmer studied mining and geology at the TU Berlin and the TU Clausthal , where he received his doctorate in 1970 ( use of piezoelectric measurements on quartz-containing rocks in structural science ). He then worked as a geologist in the exploration of deposits for ores, industrial minerals and coal for Metallgesellschaft AG until 1986. He was abroad a lot, especially in Australia and Canada.
