Friedrich Auer

Friedrich Auer (von Brennberg) († 1356 ) - also called Friedrich I. Auer zu Auburg - was a Regensburg mayor from 1330 and caused the successful Auer uprising of the citizens against his arbitrary rule.

history

The rule of patrician families in the city of Regensburg in the 14th century, as in other southern German cities, was not without disputes. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Auer zu Brennberg patrician family, who were very wealthy in the area around Regensburg, ruled in Regensburg . This family had owned the patrician house with the Thomaskapelle in the street Am Römling  12 since 1287. The house remained in the Auer family until 1358 and was then sold to the Frumhold family, who were always among the supporters of the powerful Auer family.

Friedrich I. Auer was the son and successor of the Regensburg mayor of the same name, Friedrich Auer the Elder. Ä. When he was elected mayor, he had allied himself with the guilds and was then elected mayor in 1330/31. He was also supported by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian , who wanted to secure influence in Regensburg. The wealth of the family enabled Friedrich I. Auer to build up an arbitrary dictatorial rule in the city and he was then forcibly expelled from the city in 1334 during the Auer uprising of the citizens he had oppressed with sons and relatives. Friedrich I. Auer withdrew to his castle in Brennberg , from where he led a violent feud with attacks on the Regensburg merchants for 8 years . In 1343 the opposing parties were reconciled and Frederick I became a normal citizen of the city again for six years.
