Friedrich Gaedcke

Friedrich Georg Carl Gaedcke (born June 5, 1828 in Bonn , † September 19, 1890 in Dömitz ) was a German pharmacist who isolated the active ingredient of cocaine .

His father was a university stable master. 1844–1846 he learned a pharmacist in the Rostock Ratsapotheke . He then worked as a pharmacist and was a student in Rostock in 1850 and 1851. In 1854 he obtained his doctorate.

In 1855 he published in the Archives of Pharmacy Ueber das Erythroxylin , represented from the leaves of the shrub Erythroxylum coca cultivated in South America .

In 1856 he took over the pharmacy in Dömitz , which he managed for 34 years.
