Life

Graefe was born the son of the physician Friedrich Graefe. After graduating from high school in Wiesbaden, he studied mathematics in Karlsruhe, Munich, Zurich and Bern from 1874 to 1878. In 1879 he received his doctorate in philosophy in Bern. Then he was a private lecturer in mathematics in Bern until 1881. In 1881 he came to the TH Darmstadt as a private lecturer in mathematics . In 1885 he was awarded the title of professor in Darmstadt. In 1894 he became a professor at the TH. This was combined with a teaching assignment for mathematics. Three years later he became an adjunct professor for higher mathematics at the TH Darmstadt. In 1907 he was finally appointed associate professor for higher mathematics.

From 1905 until his retirement in September 1918 he was librarian at the university library of the TH Darmstadt. Like his predecessors, he held this position on a part-time basis. During Graefe's long term of office, it was possible to improve the personnel situation of the university library. From 1912, the position of a library assistant in the budget was converted into a full-fledged position for the library. This was the first time that it was possible to ensure continuity of personnel in the library work of the university library. Since 1921 this was an administrative senior secretary.

In 1888 Graefe was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Friedrich Graefe died in December 1918, a few weeks after his retirement due to illness, shortly before his 63rd birthday. He was married to Ida Doerlam since 1897.
