Friedrich Kurschat (born April 24, 1806 in Noragehlen, Niederung district , East Prussia ; † August 23, 1884 in Cranz ) was a Prussian-Lithuanian theologian, linguist and publicist. From 1841 to 1883 he headed the Lithuanian seminar at the Albertus University in Königsberg .

Life

In Noragehlen he attended the primary school run by his father. From 1823 to 1833 he was a primary school teacher in Joneikischken , Gaszen and Kalthof . After attending the Royal High School in Elbing , he studied at the Albertus University from 1836 to 1840. In succession to Ludwig Rhesa , he became head of the Lithuanian seminar. In 1844 he became a Lithuanian military preacher . The Albertina appointed him professor in 1871 . For his achievements in Lithuanian studies , he was awarded an honorary doctorate as Dr. phil. hc awarded.

meaning

Kurschat was the spiritual father of the Protestant Lithuanians in East Prussia and trained their preachers. From July 1849 he published the newspaper Keleiwis (Der Wanderer) for the Lithuanians living in Prussia. It was Prussian-patriotic and loyal to the king.

Kurschat improved the Lithuanian Bible, published in 1853, and made a great contribution to the scientific description of the Lithuanian language, to the standardization of which he contributed significantly.
