The Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Society is an association for the preservation, research and dissemination of silent films based in the East Westphalian city of Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia .
history
The company was founded on January 17, 1989. The decisive factor was the 100th birthday of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, who was born in Bielefeld , and a related exhibition by the city administration. The eight founding members wanted to maintain and promote the memory of the director, but also of the silent film as a whole. Accordingly, these goals were included in the association's statutes. In addition, the film and music festival is organized by the company every year . The first Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau film prizes were awarded by the society, later by the society for the award of the Bielefeld Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Film Prize eV .
Publications
From 1991 to 2005 the society published a series of publications whose focus was on regional film and silent film history.
