Friedrich Winnes

Friedrich Winnes (born July 21, 1949 in Heidelberg ; † May 1, 2005 ) was a contemporary German artist of Mail Art .

Life and work

Born in Heidelberg in 1949, he and his parents moved to the GDR in the early 1950s . There he studied mechanical engineering in Karl-Marx-Stadt and worked as an engineer at Bergmann-Borsig in Berlin . On May 1st, 1975 he met Robert Rehfeldt and copied his documentation of the Warsaw Mail Art exhibition. Since then he has participated in many Mail Art exhibitions. In 1990 he founded a small travel agency and arranged trips to Paris for GDR Marks .

After reunification he worked in a West Berlin screen printing company. In 1994 he published the book Mail Art Szene DDR 1975-1990 with Lutz Wohlrab . In 2002 he was permanently employed at Edition Staeck. He moved to Heidelberg, where he set up the Heidelberg Mail Art archive for Klaus and Rolf Staeck and himself.

Friedrich Winnes died on May 1, 2005 of a stroke.
