Robert Rehfeldt (born January 5, 1931 in Stargard in Pomerania , † September 28, 1993 in Berlin ) was a German artist.

Life and work

Robert Rehfeldt grew up in Pomerania and Berlin . In 1940 he came up with the Kinderlandverschickung to Bad Ischl , Austria, to a foster family. His mother brought him back to Berlin in 1946.

He worked here as a stonemason and transport worker and applied for a degree. In East Berlin he was rejected by the newly founded art college , which is why Rehfeldt enrolled at the University of Fine Arts in West Berlin in 1948 . After graduating in 1953, he worked as a graphic artist, press illustrator and photo journalist. From 1963 he was freelance in the eastern part of the city and was one of the experimental artists. As a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , Rehfeldt received many building-related commissions . In the early 1970s he came into contact with the international mail art scene through Polish artists and Klaus Groh . He succeeded in building up an extensive network of contacts between Eastern and Western Europe, the USA and Latin America. He was also in a postal art exchange with Nam June Paik , Wolf Vostell , Robert Filliou , Horst Tress and Dick Higgins . In 1975 Rehfeldt asked artists from all over the world to design a postcard and turned it into the GDR's first Mail Art exhibition - on the occasion of a separate exhibition in the Galeria Teatru Studio in Warsaw . He inspired and supported the Mail Art exhibitions in the East Berlin gallery Arkade and in the EP gallery of Jürgen Schweinbraden . In 1986 Rehfeldt organized the East Berlin meeting of the 1st Decentralized International Mail Art Congress. He created an extensive graphic work and also dealt with photography and Super 8 film. In 1991, in addition to his own work, he also exhibited his Mail Art project from 1975 in his retrospective at the Ephraim-Palais in Berlin. Robert Rehfeldt died on September 28, 1993 after an operation in Berlin. He was posthumously represented in a number of important group exhibitions. The Galerie Parterre Berlin set up a retrospective for him in 2008.
