Friedrichshafen steam boat company

The Friedrichshafener Dampfbootgesellschaft was the operator of the first Württemberg ground sea steamers. In 1839 the company was renamed the Württembergische Bodensee-Dampfschiffgesellschaft , and in 1854 it became part of the Württemberg State Railroad .

The company was founded on July 3, 1824 with the aim of establishing steam shipping on Lake Constance . The initiators of the society were Johann Friedrich Cotta and Edward Church , as well as David Macaire d'Hoggner , the grandfather of the airship Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin . With Stephanie from Baden , an unsuccessful attempt has already been made to introduce steam shipping on Lake Constance . But founding member Church already had positive experiences with the Guillaume Tell on Lake Geneva . In this way, King Wilhelm von Württemberg could also be won over to the company, in which he took over a 50% share. In addition, the ship's guilds could be won over to give up their shipping rights in exchange for an annuity paid by the king. As a result, the foreseeable conflict between the traditional Lädinen - and the emerging steam shipping could be defused in advance, which was important for the further development of steam shipping.

The first ship of the steam boat company was the Wilhelm , the first ground sea steamship in regular service. With the increasing success of steam shipping, the Crown Prince was commissioned in 1839 , the Queen of Württemberg in 1847 and the second Wilhelm in 1851 . With the further expansion of Württemberg steam shipping and due to the close integration with the railways as a large means of passenger and goods transport, the Bodensee steam ship company was taken over by the Württemberg railway in 1854.
