Fritz-Encke-Volkspark
The Volkspark Raderthal in Cologne is a park in the line of the south green belt, which connects the inner green belt in the south of Cologne with the outer green belt. The Volkspark is located between Brühler and Bonner Strasse and borders the military ring in the south . It still belongs to the area of the outer Cologne green belt .
Emergence
The park was laid out in 1922/1926 by the then Cologne horticultural director Fritz Encke on the site of the former peace powder magazine of the Cologne Fortress Ring in the Cologne-Raderthal district , now part of the Cologne-Rodenkirchen district. At that time, the idea of social green, a public park for large sections of the population with playgrounds and storage areas as well as a drinking fountain integrated into a round temple, was important.
In 1927 the radio station Köln-Raderthal was built in the park instead of the planned pub and operated until 1932.
Todays situation
The park was cut considerably in 1950/1951 for the construction of the Volkspark settlement for the families of the English occupation troops. The apartments are now sold to young families who appreciate life close to the park. After the park was almost forgotten, it was restored in a joint effort by the Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection and a citizens' initiative since 2001 with the help of donors and sponsors. The last chapter for the time being was the inauguration of the restored temple with a new fountain by the artist Şerban Rusu with a stainless steel base and bronze fountain bowl on the day of the open monument on September 10, 2006, which had the theme: “Roses, lawns and borders, historical gardens ".
As one of his most important creations, the park was renamed "Fritz-Encke-Volkspark" in 2002 in memory of the builder of numerous green spaces and sports facilities in Cologne.
