The Fritz Kortner price is by the magazine Theater heute conferred and, donated by her co-founder and publisher Erhard Friedrich Theater Prize , which according to the actor and director Fritz Kortner is named (1892-1970). It was first awarded in 1987 and was intended to “ once a year honor a German-speaking theater artist whose daring, truthfulness and aesthetic curiosity show that Kortner's example continues to work. "

From the year 2000 the prize was no longer awarded. Instead, the money that the Friedrich Foundation continued to make available was now used to support young artists and to support projects in theater education and research. In 2000 the prize money went to the International Forum of Young Stage Members as part of the Berlin Theatertreffen . (See also the Boy Gobert Prize .)
