Fritz Gartz (born February 3, 1883 in Berlin , † September 1, 1960 in Söcking ) was a German painter .

Fritz Gartz is assigned to the " Expressive Realism " style , which was shaped by the art historian Rainer Zimmermann .

Born the seventh of twelve children into a baker's family, he attended a private school for painting in Berlin from September 1905. From October 1906 he was a student at Walter Thor's painting school in Munich, then to be taught at Hugo von Habermann's art academy . In 1906 he met Jorgos Busianis and Giorgio de Chirico in Munich and drew an early portrait of de Chirico in 1908. In 1907 Fritz Gartz went on a trip to Egypt. In March 1908 he got his first marriage. From 1911 to 1913 he was a member of the German artists' association "Die Juryfrei" in Munich. In 1914 he became a member of the Free Munich Artists. His style was influenced by impressionism and quickly found an expressive form of expression. His talent for portraits and later for landscape painting showed up early on.

In 1915 he was called up for military service, from which he returned in 1917 after being wounded. Several trips took him to Italy, the Bavarian mountains and the Chiemsee, where he devoted himself to landscape painting. In 1928 he married for the second time and built a house in Söcking near Starnberg. In 1932 he received the Albrecht Dürer Prize from the city of Nuremberg. From 1934 he withdrew into his family life. Various commissioned work contributed to the livelihood. In 1954 his work was shown for the first time in a solo exhibition at the Städtische Galerie in Munich. Fritz Gartz died in Söcking in 1960 after a long heart condition.

In Starnberg the "Fritz-Gartz-Weg" is named after him.
