Walter Thor: Self-Portrait (1906)

Walter Thor (born February 13, 1870 in Neusalz an der Oder , Province of Silesia , † January 15, 1929 in Munich ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

The son of an engineer first attended Nikolaus Gysis' nature class at the Munich Art Academy from May 1889 , but after a short time switched to Franz von Defregger , whose master class he became.

After leaving the academy in 1896, he founded a private painting and drawing school in Munich, which he headed until 1921. Walter Thor was one of the founding members of the Luitpold Group and later became President of the Munich artists' association Der Bund . He also worked for the magazine Jugend , which published some of his works on their covers.

Walter Thor worked mainly as a portraitist , depicting people from all walks of life with great psychological empathy. The influence of Impressionism can be seen in its loose brushwork and in the finely graded, never garish colors . The quality of his portraits often leads to comparisons with Wilhelm Leibl .

The high esteem in which Walter Thor's painting was held is evident from the numerous awards that his works have received at art exhibitions at home and abroad.

From 1904, Walter Thor and his family - who were friends with the animal painter Otto Gebler - lived on the second floor of Ainmillerstraße 10 in Munich- Schwabing , and from 1910 on there was also his studio in the attic of the same house .

Walter Thor died at the age of 59. His grave is in the Munich North Cemetery . From November 15 to December 31, 1929, the Munich artists' cooperative organized an exhibition of his posthumous works.
