Fritz Mandl , also Fred Mandel or Fred Mandl (born July 13, 1908 in Cologne , Germany , † February 21, 1985 in Culver City , California , United States ) was a German-American cameraman .

Live and act

Mandl began his career in Austria at the side of his experienced colleague Hans Androschin . He then took pictures for the newsreel . After the seizure of power , the Jew Mandl fled to Spain . There he was behind the camera in some films under the slightly changed name of Fred Mandel. After the outbreak of the civil war , Mandl left the country again in 1936 and settled in the USA shortly before the end of the year.

Mandl became an American citizen in 1940 and served as a cameraman in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II . He could barely gain a foothold in American cinema films, but in the 1950s he photographed some ambitious Hollywood productions as a simple or second-unit cameraman such as Endstation Sehnsucht , The Caine was her fate and Stanley Kramer's historical epic Pride and Passion and filmed in Spain William Wyler's Grand West Wide Land .

Since 1962, Fritz Mandl was a sought-after cameraman for popular US television series, including Auf der Flucht , The Munsters and Daktari . In 1970 he returned to the cinema and directed the camera in Russ Meyer's bestselling film The Seven Minutes .
