Fritz Pilz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fritz Pilz ( September 26, 1927 in Untertal near Schladming - January 14, 2016 ) was an Austrian sculptor . He had been married to Margot Pilz since 1957 .

Pilz completed an apprenticeship in ceramics and the Federal College for Wood and Stone Processing in Hallein . From 1950 to 1954 he studied sculpture with Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna .

At first he was still working purely representationally, but soon he came up with an abstract formal language that was typical for him. Despite the abstraction from the natural model, his designs associate natural reality. He had a haptically sensual relationship to the material, in wood as well as in stone.

Pilz developed an unmistakable personal style. Many of his works found their way into the public space of Vienna and in collections such as those of the MUSA (City of Vienna) or the Artothek des Bundes. Fritz Pilz was a member of the Secession . In 2009 he handed over his bequest to the cultural department of the City of Vienna.

Pilz is buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery .
