Froech mac Idaith [ froiç mak 'iðiθʴ ] is the name of a legendary figure from the Ulster cycle of Celtic mythology in Ireland .

mythology

Froech mac Idaith is the son of the fairy Bé Find and Boand's nephew and is considered the most beautiful man in Ireland and Scotland . He is the main character of Táin Bó Froích ("Driving away the cattle Froech"), a Remscéla (pre-narration to Táin Bó Cuailnge ), the two parts of which are loosely connected only by him.

When Froech's wife Treblann, his sons and his cattle are stolen, he and Conall Cernach follow the looters across the English Channel to their castle in the Alps . The castle is destroyed, the loot taken from the robbers. Treblann, who is said to be a granddaughter of Oengus and Coirpre's foster daughter , and thus a descendant of Túatha Dé Danann , is no longer mentioned as Froech's wife in the other part of the legend.

Here he woos Ailill mac Máta and Medb for their daughter Findabair , whereupon Ailill tries to kill him with a trick because he does not want him as a son-in-law. During the campaign to Ulster , Medb offers her daughter to the one who defeats Cú Chulainn . Froech is the first to report for this fight, but is slain by Cú Chulainn.
