Fronveste (Kemnath)

Old Fronveste in Kemnath

The listed Alte Fronveste in the tower district of Kemnath was the place where the serious crimes, the so-called maleficent cases, were dealt with. Here the embarrassing question and torture were used to force a confession from an alleged delinquent. The servant also had his apartment in the Fronveste. The gallows was outside the city on the road to Waldeck . The police prison was later established here. Cells, some of which have been preserved today, are evidence of the building's use as a prison.

Building

The building, preserved in its original form, is a three-story, plastered solid construction with a high hipped roof from the 17th century. It has stone walls and corner blocks . The adjacent archway dates from the 18th century. Part of the building was erected over the city wall from the second half of the 14th century.

Todays use

The Kemnath local history and handgun museum was established in the building in 1984. The main thing here is the military history collection , which is reminiscent of the Fortschauer Armatur-Werk , the first Bavarian rifle manufacturer, and which at the same time gives an overview of the development of German handguns in the early modern period. In addition, the prehistoric finds from the Kemnath area are exhibited here, which point to the beginnings of human settlement in today's Kemnath region, dating back more than 50,000 years. In the museum there are also special exhibitions on topics from regional history and culture. In the defense tower next to it there is a fully equipped forge.
