Amniotic fluid discharge puncture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An amniotic fluid discharge puncture (amnion drainage / discharge amniocentesis ) is an invasive measure in prenatal medicine for the treatment of severe polyhydramnios during pregnancy .

If the amniotic fluid index increases significantly above the normal volume , an amniotic fluid discharge puncture can be considered, in which the amount of amniotic fluid is reduced to prevent possible complications (including premature birth ). For this purpose, that is the amniotic sac punctured with a hollow needle and by an inserted catheter , the excess water is drained fruit. This process may have to be carried out at individually determined intervals (often on a daily basis) until the end of pregnancy ( serial amniotic drainage ). This depends in particular on what causes the amniotic fluid to multiply and to what extent.

The opposite of amniotic fluid discharge puncture (amniotic drainage) is amniotic fluid replenishment (amniotic infusion). It is performed in cases of severe oligohydramnios .
