Frunzensky univermag ( Russian Фрунзенский универмаг , scientific transliteration Frunzenskij univermag , German about Frunze department store ) is a building and architectural monument in Saint Petersburg in Russia .

The building was erected on Obwodny Canal from 1934 to 1938 in the style of the transition from constructivism to socialist classicism and is a defining building in downtown Saint Petersburg. It consists of two connected structures: a massive right-angled corner building and an elongated, slightly convex wing that follows the bend of the canal. With the House of the Soviets and the Fur Palace , the Frunze department store is part of a planned monumental ensemble on Moskovsky Prospect . The architects were Yevgeny Katonin, Leontiy Katonin, Yevgeny Sokolow and K. Ioganson.

The building was used as a department store from 1938. The building was badly damaged by bombing in 1942, but despite the war, the Frunsenski uniwermag was restored and reopened as a department store in the summer of 1944. After a fire in 1988, in which the inside of the building was largely irreparably destroyed, it was partially rebuilt in 1992 and, from 1998, partially used as a department store. From 2007 the building stood empty - changing owners had different usage plans. From 2014 the inside of the building was completely renovated and converted into rentable office space and reopened as a commercial building in September 2015. Previously, the original state of the exterior facade from 1938 was restored with the help of the state restorers of Saint Petersburg by reapplying the dark gray terrazzo plaster used in the construction.

In 2001, the Saint Petersburg Committee for the State Inspection and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments temporarily added the Frunensky uniwermag to the list of newly identified cultural assets and later protected the facade as an architectural document of the transition from Constructivism to Stalinist neoclassicism. The entire building complex has been an architectural monument since 2015.
