The Frunze Museum is one of the most important museums in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek . It is built around the birthplace of the Soviet military leader Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze .

location

The Frunze Museum is located in the center of Bishkek, immediately to the northeast of Ala-Too Square , the central square of the Kyrgyz capital. The person Michail Wassiljewitsch Frunze is still very present in his hometown Bishkek, which was also called Frunze after him from 1926 to 1991 , among other things by a statue of the Soviet general in the city center. The street on which the Frunze Museum is located is also named after Mikhail Frunze.

history

The museum was established as the first museum in Bishkek in 1925 in the house where Frunze was born. It is a simple thatched hut. In 1967 a large new building for the Frunze Museum was completed around this hut. This offers 1,760 square meters of exhibition space on three floors. The birthplace of the namesake is enclosed by this new building, but is still used today as an exhibition area.

A total of around 6000 exhibits are on display in the Frunze Museum. Part of the permanent exhibition in the museum is dedicated to the life of Mikhail Frunze. Numerous pictures, posters, writings, uniforms and everyday objects are reminiscent of the Soviet military leader. A second part of the exhibition deals with the city history of Bishkek and traces the development of the city with numerous pictures and documents. The focus of the exhibition is on the history of Bishkek and Frunze during Soviet rule. Overall, the museum has a large fund of exhibits from the Soviet era , including numerous exhibits that served as Soviet propaganda . One of the most prominent exhibits in the museum is a painting showing Frunze and Lenin at a military meeting. Most of the information and labels in the museum are only available in Russian and Kyrgyz .

Occasionally, special exhibitions are set up in the Frunze Museum. For example, on the occasion of Manas Day on December 4, 2019, a special exhibition on the Kyrgyz national epic Manas was presented.
