The Ala-Too Square ( Kyrgyz Ала-тоо аянты Ala-Too ayanty ) is a square in the center of Bishkek , the capital of Kyrgyzstan . It was created in 1984, but since then has always been the central scene of political disputes in the Kyrgyz Republic.

history

Lenin statue in the square

The square was built in 1984 for the 60th anniversary of the Kyrgyz SSR , on which an 18-  ton statue in honor of Lenin was erected. When it was inaugurated, the facility was named Lenin Square ; after Kyrgyzstan declared independence in 1991, it was renamed Ala-Too Square . In 2003 the Lenin statue had to give way to a Statue of Liberty ( Erkindik ). However, this expressed only a small piece of the country's history, so that in 2011 the installation of an equestrian statue of the mythical Manas , to celebrate the 20 years of independence of Kyrgyzstan, referred to the earlier history of the country. The oversized bronze figure (17 m high) with a sword in hand stands on a pedestal made of red polished granite. At the foot, seating was made from the same material. The statue in the center of the square is framed by several square flower beds at some distance.

On March 24, 2005, after unrest across the country, the largest demonstration of the tulip revolution against the then government under President Askar Akayev took place on Ala-Too Square with 15,000 participants. Clashes with law enforcement officers loyal to the government resulted in two people being killed and over 100 injured. After the demonstrators were briefly evicted, they were able to recapture the square and then stormed the presidential seat, the White House . Akayev had to flee the country and was granted asylum in Russia .

In 2008, a memorial event for the Kyrgyz writer Tschingis Aitmatov , who died that year, was held on the square , in whose honor another statue was erected in 2011.

In the years that followed, Ala-Too-Platz was repeatedly the scene of protests against the respective government as well as demonstrations during the change of government in Kyrgyzstan in 2010 . This overthrew then President Kurmanbek Bakiyev , who came to power in 2005 after the tulip revolution. In February 2017, people again demonstrated against the imprisonment of Ömürbek Tekebajew , who was part of the government and part of the opposition in previous years.

As part of the protests against the arrest of the former Kyrgyz President Atambayev , several dozen protesters gathered in the central square of the capital on the night of August 7, 2019 and demanded the immediate resignation of the incumbent President Dscheenbekov .
