Ömürbek Tekebajew ( Russian Омурбек Текебаев , born December 22, 1958 in Jalalabat ) is one of the most famous politicians in Kyrgyzstan .

Biographical

Tekebayev first studied physics at the Kyrgyz State University in the capital Bishkek . After graduation, he worked as a teacher in Akman Basar-Korgonskij, a village in Jalalabat province. From the late 1980s, Tekebayev studied again at the State University, namely law , which he successfully completed in 1994.

While still studying in Bishkek, Tekebalew founded the Ata Meken party in 1992 and then sat for several years in the Kyrgyz parliament, the Jogorku Kengesch . In the presidential election in 2000 he stood against incumbent Askar Akayev and was defeated. After the parliamentary elections in 2005 and the tulip revolution that followed, Tekebayev was elected President of Parliament in March 2005. He resigned from this office in February 2006 and gathered opposition to President Kurmanbek Bakiyev . During the coup in April 2010 , Tekebayev was briefly arrested, after which Rosa Otunbayeva appointed him as the representative for constitutional reforms in her interim government . In the rescheduled presidential and parliamentary elections in 2010 , Tekebayev ran again as President of Parliament; but his election failed, probably because he was accused of having fueled the unrest in southern Kyrgyzstan in 2010 . Two weeks later, Akhmatbek Keldibekov , who had received three more votes, took over from Tekebayev .

In 2017, Tekebayev was arrested again, this time on charges of accepting roughly $ 1 million in bribes as vice-president of the transitional government . In return, he is said to have promised an investor to take over a Kyrgyz telecommunications company. This arrest threatens Tekebayev's further political ambitions.
