Foot parking brake

As a foot parking brake , a type of parking brake is referred to as it is used by some automobile manufacturers, e.g. B. Mercedes-Benz is installed. The mechanism is the same as that of a stick handbrake, actuation is via a pedal instead of a handbrake lever. The pedal is located in the driver's footwell on the outside of the vehicle. The parking brake is released using a hand lever.

A disadvantage of the foot-operated parking brake is starting up on a hill , as you first have to take out the gear and engage in vehicles with manual transmissions .

The foot-operated parking brake was installed in Mercedes-Benz cars from the W 115 series . Exceptions are the W 201 series and the A , B , Mercedes G-Class and SLK-Class series . At Citroën , the foot parking brake was used in the DS / ID and in the XM . It can also be found in the Toyota Prius . Further examples: BMW 7 Series , VW Phaeton , numerous vehicles from the USA.

A foot-operated parking brake can also be retrofitted in a motor vehicle as part of the motor vehicle adaptation for physically handicapped people if the operation of the hand brake lever z. B. is not possible because of an arm amputation.
