Starting on the mountain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hill start is an everyday situation with the handling of a motor vehicle in the road , but just often presents difficulties novice drivers.

The description of starting up on the mountain only partially addresses the problem in practice, since the same circumstances are ubiquitous, for example in multi-storey or underground garages , when a vehicle driver wants to change from one level to the next higher and suddenly due to given circumstances while negotiating the incline must stop. The term starting on the mountain has nevertheless established itself in driving schools as a term for this fact.

description

If a motor vehicle that is equipped with a manual transmission is on an incline with the engine running , the brakes depressed and the clutch depressed, there is a risk that when the brake is released, the vehicle will roll down and collide with other vehicles or people waiting behind it. In this respect, mastering the approach on the mountain is a fundamentally important technique.

Technical implementation

In order to enable starting up on a hill, the vehicle driver first applies the parking brake . Then the engine is brought to a speed of about 2000 revolutions per minute by lightly pressing the gas pedal . The pressure on the clutch pedal is then reduced in small steps until a pressure or drag point can be felt at which the clutch connects to the engine via the transmission . At this point, vibrations can be felt in the vehicle because the motor wants to move the vehicle, but this is prevented by the applied parking brake. In vehicles that are driven by the front wheels and the parking brake acts on the rear wheels, the force of the motor lowers the vehicle in the rear .

At this point in time, the driver increases the pressure on the accelerator pedal again slightly, then the parking brake is completely released.

Technical aids

In connection with electronic parking brakes, there are also brake assistants on the market for newer vehicles, which are intended to facilitate hill start-up. The danger with such systems is that a vehicle driver is also unfamiliar with vehicles in which there are no corresponding electronic assistants. Accordingly, it is advisable to be able to start off on hills without such assistance systems.
