Fullarton House was a country house near Troon in the Scottish administrative division of South Ayrshire .

history

Map of the Fullartons estate from 1828, with the Lady Isle

King Robert II loaned the Crosbie estate to the Fullarton family in 1344 . Built in the 16th century, Tower House Crosbie Castle was partially demolished when Fullarton House replaced it in the 18th century. The remains of the old castle still served as an ice house for the new country house.

William Fullarton had Fullarton House built in 1745. His son had it rebuilt. The associated stables were built in the 1790s. In 1805 the Duke of Portland bought the property. He lived there for a while but was more interested in the development of the Port of Troon and the Kilmarnock to Troon railway line .

In 1928 the administration bought the country house, but had it demolished in 1966 because they could no longer bear the maintenance costs. The stables were converted into condominiums in 1974.

description

The access route to the house was modified by William Bentinck, Duke of Portland , and the house was modified so that the front became the rear. This gave a great view of the Isle of Arran and the Firth of Clyde . Originally there were four pillars at the rear of the site, two of which were gate pillars and two carried stone hawks , a sign of the birding profession.

The property is now a public park, in which you can still find remains of the old country house, such as the ruins of the ice house, the remains of a pigeon house and the former stables, now a block of flats.

A thatched lodge called Heather House stood at the entrance to the country house until it burned down in the 1950s.
