Duke of Portland was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain , named after the Isle of Portland in England.

The Dukes' family seat was Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire .

Award

The title was bestowed on July 6, 1715 to Henry Bentinck, 2nd Earl of Portland , of the Bentinck family . This was an important MP first in the House of Commons , then later in the House of Lords .

The family later changed their family name to Cavendish-Bentinck .

Subordinate title

Subordinate titles of the Dukedom were Marquess of Titchfield (created 1715), Earl of Portland (created 1689), Viscount Woodstock (created 1689) and Baron Cirencester (created 1689). While the former title also belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain, all other titles were assigned to the Peerage of England .

The Duke's eldest son and title heir carried the courtesy title of Marquess of Titchfield .

Another title

In 1880, Augusta Cavendish-Bentinck , the stepmother of the sixth duke , was bestowed the title Baroness Bolsover , of Bolsover Castle in the County of Derby . After her death, the sixth duke inherited the title, but it expired with the death of the seventh duke in 1977.

Going out

When the 9th duke died on July 30, 1990, the title expired. A distant relative, descended from a younger son of the first duke's father, only followed as the 11th Earl of Portland .

Of the subordinate titles that of the Marquess of Titchfield expired , while the titles created in 1689 are now listed as subordinate titles of the Earl of Portland .
