Earl of Portland
Earl of Portland is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England , named after the Isle of Portland in England, which was long worn by the Duke of Portland as a subordinate title.
Awards
The title was created twice in total. This happened for the first time in favor of Richard Weston, 1st Baron Weston , in 1633. He had already been appointed Baron Weston , of Neyland in the County of Suffolk , in 1628 . He had been Chancellor of the Exchequer and Lord High Treasurer in the Kingdom of England . The title expired in 1688 with the death of the fourth earl .
In the following year, immediately after the end of the Glorious Revolution, a new award by King William III took place. to his favorite John William Bentinck . This not only brokered his marriage to Mary of England , but also maintained contact with supporters in England.
Subordinate title
The subordinate titles of today's earliest dignity are Viscount Woodstock and Baron Cirencester . Both titles were also created in 1689 and therefore also belong to the Peerage of England.
The title heir ( Heir Apparent ) carries the courtesy title Viscount Woodstock .
Other titles
In 1716 Henry Bentinck, 2nd Earl of Portland , was promoted to Duke of Portland and Marquess of Titchfield . These titles expired in 1990 with the death of the ninth duke. The earliest dignity was in the meantime led as a subordinate title of the Dukes. It then passed on to a descendant of the first earl.
In 1880, Augusta Cavendish-Bentinck , the stepmother of the sixth duke , was bestowed the title Baroness Bolsover , of Bolsover Castle in the County of Derby . After her death, the sixth duke inherited the title, but it expired with the death of the seventh duke in 1977.
The Earl of Portland has also held the title Imperial Count Bentinck since December 29, 1732 because of the inheritance of the imperial dominions of Knyphausen and Varel in the nobility of the Holy Roman Empire . Since 1886 this title has been allowed to be used in England with a Royal License.
