Henry Bentinck, 11th Earl of Portland

Henry Noel Bentinck, 11th Earl of Portland ( October 2, 1919 - January 30, 1997 ) was a British peer and politician. He was a member of the German-English noble family Bentinck .

life and career

Bentinck was the son of Robert Charles Graf Bentinck (1875-1932) and Lady Norah Ida Emily Noel (1881-1939). Before he inherited the British title, he had held the old German title of (Reich) Count Bentinck and Waldeck-Limpurg since 1932 . Due to special royal permission, the family was allowed to use the title in the United Kingdom since 1886.

He attended the Royal Military College Sandhurst , Berkshire.

During the Second World War Bentinck served as an officer in the Coldstream Guards . During this time he was wounded twice and was taken prisoner of war. From 1952 to 1955 he worked as a cattle breeding assistant in Tasmania .

With his first wife, Pauline Ursula Mellowes (1921–1967), whom he married on October 13, 1940 in London , he had three children, two daughters Sorrel and Anna and a son, Timothy Charles Robert Noel Bentinck, who was later 12. Earl of Portland . From February 23, 1974 he was married to Jennifer Hopkins for the second time.

Bentinck wrote several books: "Anyone Can Understand the Atom" was published in 1965 and deals with the topic of nuclear energy . In 1966 he published the children's book "The Avenue of Flutes", and in 1971 the thriller "Isoworg" appeared.

When his 7th cousin Victor Cavendish-Bentinck, 9th Duke of Portland died on July 30, 1990, he inherited his title of Earl of Portland , but not the title of Duke of Portland , which became extinct. Bentinck was a direct descendant of Johann Wilhelm Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland († 1709). A hereditary seat in the House of Lords was associated with the earl title . He made his inaugural address in Parliament on April 28, 1992.

Bentinck died in January 1997 at the age of 77.
