William Arthur Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, 7th Duke of Portland KG (* 16th March 1893 in Mayfair , London ; † 21st March 1977 in Nottinghamshire ), until 1943 known by the courtesy title Marquess of Titchfield , was a British politician of the Conservative Party .

life and career

He was born in 1893 as the elder son of William Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke of Portland , and his wife Winifred Dallas-Yorke . He attended Eton College . From 1922 to 1943 he was an MP for Newark in the House of Commons . From 1927 to 1929 and 1931 he was each subordinate minister in the treasury . In 1943, when his father died, he inherited his title and the associated seat in the House of Lords . He was also Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire from 1939 to 1963 .

Cavendish-Bentinck was married to Ivy Gordon-Lennox on August 12, 1915. The marriage resulted in two daughters:

Since he left no male descendants when he died, his title Duke of Portland fell to a distant cousin along with the subordinate titles Marquess of Titchfield , Earl of Portland , Viscount Woodstock and Baron Cirencester . His title Baron Bolsover was extinguished. The ancestral home of the Welbeck Abbey family was inherited by his surviving daughter.
