Stadsschouwburg

The Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam (City Theater Amsterdam) is a traditional theater on Leidseplein in Amsterdam .

After the merger with the Toneelgroep Amsterdam (theater group Amsterdam) it now operates under the name Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA).

history

The city theater originally stood on Keizersgracht , a wooden theater that was replaced in 1638 by a building designed by the Dutch architect Jacob van Campen (1595-1657). This burned down in 1772 and a new one was built in classicist style on Leidseplein. But on February 20, 1890, the wooden building also went up in flames.

The architects Van Gendt and Springer designed a new theater and designed the facade in the Renaissance style . In 1894 the theater was inaugurated in its present form.

Since baroque opera, ballet and dance performances are also shown, it is also a much frequented place to visit with tourists.

The Stadsschouwburg and the Toneelgroep Amsterdam (theater group Amsterdam) merged on January 1st, 2018 and have been operating under the name "Internationaal Theater Amsterdam" (ITA) since the 2018/2019 season.
