Crosbie Castle (Scotland)
Crosbie Castle

Crosbie Castle is a ruin of a tower house near Troon in Scotland administrative unit South Ayrshire . The Fullarton family lived on the estate for several centuries. The lands belonged to the barony Corsbie Fullartoune . The ruins of Castle Crosbie served after the establishment of the country house Fullarton House as ice house .

history

King Robert II loaned the Crosbie estate to the Fullartons in 1344 . The castle was built in the 16th century. In the 18th century the old castle had already been partially demolished and converted into an ice house for Fullarton House; a pigeon house stood nearby. In 1969, part of the ice house was demolished to make it safe and the pigeon house was razed to the ground. The property was known as Crosby Place and later became Fullarton House just before the new house of the same name replaced it.

description

The castle was rebuilt at least three times; it followed the square shape common throughout Ayrshire . The current ruins are mostly remnants of the dungeon of the old castle. When the Lairds had power over life and death, criminals were incarcerated there before being tried in the Baronate Court. Many of the building blocks of Crosbie Castle were used to build the first full board house. An underground stream flows through the old castle dungeon, which makes it ideal for use as a cold store or ice house.

Close sees similarities in this castle with Monkcastle near Dalry .
