The Fulton County Courthouse is a historic listed 1772 completed courthouse of Fulton County in Johnstown, New York . It is the oldest court building in New York State and one of the five oldest in the United States.

History of the building

The building was initiated by the town's founder and owner of the region, William Johnson . The building was erected in the historic center of Johnstown on the corner of William Street and Main Street (official address: "11 N William St, Johnstown, NY 12095").

The stones for the courthouse were brought from England by ship to Albany and from there to the building site in horse-drawn carriages.

The original building complex is a rectangular, one-and-a-half-story, five-by-three- bay brick building in the Georgian style. In the late 18th or early 19th century, the building was expanded to include a dome and around 1900 an annex to the west, so that the building is now T-shaped.

The location now serves as a family court. Additional county jurisdictions are located at 223 West Main Street, Johnstown.

Monument protection

In 1972 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a monument worth preserving and protecting .
