The Fundación Hondureña de Investigación Agrícola ( Honduran Foundation for Agricultural Research ), FHIA for short , is a non-profit research institution based in San Pedro Sula in the Department of Cortés in Honduras .

The main research field is the development of disease-resistant plants, especially dessert bananas and plantains , but also other types of local agricultural plants such as cocoa. The foundation is continuing the development program of the United Fruit Company (later merged into Chiquita Brands International ), which had been breeding new varieties of bananas since 1958. The foundation receives funds today next to the Honduran government also funds from the Integrated Watershed Resources Management Program of the United States Agency for International Development .

FHIA researchers developed the first banana resistant to the disease threats of the 'Cavendish' banana in 1988 . The FHIA-01 'Goldfinger' was registered for a patent in 1994 (US Patent PP08983) and the later cultivation of the FHIA-03 'Sweetheart' is already being grown in Cuba. In terms of taste, the FHIA-17 is closer to today's commercial bananas, while the further development of the FHIA-23 ' Gros Michel ' is not yet cultivable.
