Furnerius is a large impact crater to the south of the lunar front , south of Mare Fecunditatis and Petavius crater , southeast of Stevinus . The smaller Fraunhofer crater is located southwest of Furnerius .
The rim of the crater is heavily eroded and partially leveled, the interior is largely flat. The Rima Furnerius moon groove runs through the northeastern part in a southeastern direction .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French Jesuit , mathematician and geographer Georges Fournier .
The name originally appears on Giovanni Battista Riccioli's lunar map from 1651 as “Furnerius Soc. I ", where" Soc. I “stands for Societas Jesu , the order of the Jesuits. At the time of inclusion in the nomenclature and publication, the reference seems to have been lost due to a misspelling of the name. The name has since been traced back to a French mathematician named "Georges Furner" (fl. 1643).
