Furö (locally also called Furön) is an approximately 94 hectare Swedish island off the coast of Småland , about 9.3 km from Oskarshamn in the Baltic Sea . The uninhabited island is classified as a nature reserve . An island of the same name is located in Bohuslän .

Furö has a length of about 1100 meters and a width of 860 meters. The island has a maximum height of just over five meters. The coasts are very rugged. The western bay now serves as an island port. It separates the South Island from its northern parts. The eastern bay of Furös was also used as a harbor in the past.

Geologically, the island belongs to the sandstone - and moraines - the archipelago of the municipality of Oskarshamn ( Oskarshamn Islands ). This makes Furö and Runnö in the south a geologically rare element in the Oskarshamn archipelago, which otherwise consists of granite outcrops .

It is believed that the island was a seasonal fishing spot during the late Iron Age . Some roes and a stone setting were found on the island . In addition, there are a number of house floor plans. The radiocarbon method provided dates from 580 AD. Documents show that Furö was a fishing port in the 16th century.

In 1874 the state bought the northwestern part of Furö to create a combined lighthouse and pilot site. In 1911 the lighthouse was automated. In 1921 a modern lighthouse was built in Finnrevet in the southeast. The original lighthouse and pilot building burned down in 1932.

From the 1930s to the 1950s, sandstone was quarried on Furö (in Södra Ö). The quartz-rich sandstone was used to make refractory stones.

There are several wrecks in the vicinity of the Finnrevet lighthouse.
