Furuhata Tanemoto ( Japanese 古畑種基 ; born June 15, 1891 in Mie Prefecture ; died May 6, 1975 in Tōkyō ) was a Japanese forensic doctor.

Live and act

Furuhata Tanemoto graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tōkyō University in 1916 . He worked as a professor successively at the "Kanazawa Medical School" (金沢医科大学, Kanazawa ika daigaku), at his alam mater and finally at the "Tōkyō Medical and Dental University" (東京医科歯科大学, Tōkyō ika shika daigaku) .

Furuhata conducted many post-mortem investigations aimed at solving possible crimes. Well-known examples are the Teigin incident and the Shimoyama case, concerning the unexplained death of the President of the National Railway Company, Shimoyama Sadanori (1901–1949).

In 1934 Furuhata discovered the type Q blood group and studied the inheritance of blood groups. In his last years he was director of the "National Research Institute of Police Administration" (科学警察研究所, Kagaku keisatsu kenkyū-jo). In 1940 he became a member of the Leopoldina , in 1943 he received the sponsorship award (恩賜賞, Onshi-shō) of the Academy of Sciences .

In 1955 Furuhata was honored as a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Order of Culture in the same year .

↑ On January 26, 1948, a branch of Teikoku Ginko, abbreviated "Teigin", appeared by a man who pretended to be an official of the health department and gave the employees something to drink that contained cyanide "to protect against infections". 12 people died and a small amount of money was stolen. Seven months later, the police arrested the artist Hirasawa Sadamichi (平沢貞道) based on the business card used to identify the person. Hirasawa made a confession and was sentenced to death. He revoked his confession, there were appeals, so that he died after 36 years in prison, now 95 years old.
